En principe, ce terme désigne un bien quelconque offert à Dieu, afin de l'honorer et/ou de le remercier. En pratique, le terme s'applique à la collecte d'une somme d'argent lors d'un culte ou une rencontre chrétienne, somme librement déterminée par les fidèles. L'argent ainsi récolté sert généralement à payer le pasteur, à payer le prix des locaux et les autres frais, à quelques bonnes oeuvres et/ou au soutien à des missionnaires à l'étranger.
